Lot Essay

The present seal was commissioned to celebrate the sixtieth birthday of the Jiaqing Emperor, during the 24th year of his reign which corresponds to 1819. It was recorded that a group of three phrases, from which one is represented on the present seal, were chosen to be made into seal chops to commemorate Jiaqing's birthday. The two other phrases making up the set of three being: Zhuangjing Riqiang, 'Maintaining self-dignity and constant improvement', and Jianxing Buxi, 'Strive ahead with unceasing effort', cf. Guo Fuxiang, Mingqing Dihou Xiyin, Beijing, 2003, p. 169; where all three seal impressions are illustrated. It has been mentioned that the choice of the phrase carved on the present 'dragon' seal, Zhoujia yanxi zhibao, follows the Qianlong tradition which clearly indicates Jiaqing's immense respect for his father's teachings and personal thoughts, see ibid., p. 170. An example of a seal impression in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, is found on a painting, illustrated fig. 1.
