Finely carved with a soaptone Daoist Immortal in flowing robes with incised and gilt details, her broad face with youthful features, sitting on a gnarled rootwood raft below an arched branch entwined with a vine issuing jade, agate, coral and other hardstone leaves and flowers, all resting on an elaborate stained ivory stand simulating cresting waves placed on an octagonal huanghuali stand

The palaces and private appartments at the Qing court were decorated with fanciful hardstone planters and models; this graceful model of an Immortal drifting down river in search of flowers, peaches and lingzhi fungus of immortality would undoubtedly once have been placed in such an environment. Compare with two similar models of rafts carved of sandalwood in the Palace Museum, the first decorated with white jade European figures and the other with an immortal, illustrated in Qinggong Yanyue Cangzhen, Beijing chubanshe, 2002, no. 36 (fig. 1).
