Finely carved as a foreign sage leaning on a stick, wearing a long cloak fastened over the top of his head, tied with ribbons flowing down his back, the stone of an even white tone with the mottled pale brown inclusions cleverly utilised to demarcate the cloak

Lot Essay

This figure is very rare. Two examples of small jade foreigners from the Tang dynasty include one illustrated in Chinese Jade Carving, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1983, no. 165; and the other in Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1975, no. 212.
