A FINELY CARVED CYLINDRICAL BAMBOO BRUSHPOT

Carved in high relief to depict a scholar seated beside standing ladies, observing an unsaddled horse attended by two groomsmen, within a fenced background, all under scrolling clouds, the reverse side inscribed with the title: Bole Xiangma, 'Assisting in the selection of horses', signed Xiya ke, 'Carved by Xiya', and followed by a circular seal, Jin

Lot Essay

The name Xiya is identified as Jin Shaofang, also known as Jin Xiya, who was active during the early 20th century. He was skilled in calligraphy and excelled in bamboo carving, especially fan-frames; cf. Chinese Bamboo Carving, Part II, Hong Kong, 1982, pp. 54-55.
