A CARVED DUAN INKSTONE
QING DYNASTY, 18TH/19TH CENTURY

One flat side with the smooth palette emptying into a crescent-shaped ink-pool, beside an area carved in high relief to highlight the 'eye' forming the sun, detailed with birds variously perched on flowering prunus trees, the reverse side carved in shallow relief with a solitary pavilion in a distant embankment, detailed with hills in the far distance, above two sets of incised inscriptions, one short side of the inkstone inscribed with Guoyunlou zhencang, 'The Precious Collection of Guoyunlou'

Lot Essay

Guoyunlou is the collection name of the artist, Gu Linshi (1865-1930) who is recorded in Zhongguo Meishu Jiarenmin Cidian, Shanghai meishu chubanshe, 2003, p. 1550.
