A VERY RARE CARVED HUANGHUALI BRUSHPOT
QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY

Finely carved in relief to depict a tranquil fishing community set within a river-landscape scene, detailed with a group of fishermen seated on sampans, variously in discussion, their boats moored beside an embankment under a tall pine tree, further detailed with matrons minding young children, inscribed with two separate inscriptions, one including a Jiayin cyclical date and signature of Zhu Sansong
5 3/4 in. (14.5 cm.) high

Lot Essay

The inscriptions complement the idyllic river-landscape scene carved on the brushpot, and alluding to a life of tranquility. This scene is also depicted on a carved bamboo brushpot offered in the present sale, lot 1367.
