A FINE AND VERY RARE WUCAI JAR
QING DYNASTY, SHUNZHI PERIOD (1644-1661)

The full-bodied vessel finely enamelled with four multi-coloured barbed panels, each framing a different fish amid a dense ground of water weeds, reserved on an iron-red diaper ground, with lappets at the base and on the shoulder containing wan-fret and a border of cracked ice below the short everted neck with alternating red and green pointed leaves, all picked out in translucent enamels in tones of green, yellow, aubergine, iron-red and black, the base unglazed

Lot Essay

The present jar can best be compared to a rouleau vase of the same date enamelled with four upright lotus lappets, each framing a seasonal flower, the panels reserved on an iron-red diaper ground, illustrated in Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, The Commercial Press, Hong Kong, 1999, p. 65, pl 60.
