Samuel Palmer (1805-1881)

The Morning of Life (Lister 10)
etching, 1860-61, on thin japon mounted on card, a rich, tonal impression, inscribed by the artist 'The Leafy Dell, S. Palmer, At Club meeting Dec '69, Japan proof [see back, A.H.P]' on the mount in pencil, and on the reverse 'This proof belongs to A.H. Palmer, December 31st 1873 - Samuel Palmer', also inscribed on the reverse by A.H. Palmer 'If possible put next to Sir F.S. Haden's proof refered to by him as 'very positive & brilliant'. Also take care of the inscription above. As will be seen even this proof is wiped too much. Also observe the bad use of 'the match' on the ram's back. This proof was the nearest to the etcher's ideal which he could secure. The impressions published in the etching club work which were very bad for Goulding was not adequately paid, he told me', a working proof of the final state, printed in 1869 by Martin, Junior (before the edition published for the Art-Union of London by the Etching Club, 1872), trimmed to the plate-mark, pale scattered foxing, a tiny amount of paper loss at the very extreme upper left sheet corner, otherwise in good condition, framed
P., S. 135 x 210mm.
