The rectangular bevelled plate in a rosette and beaded and foliage moulded frame surmounted by a maiden's mask hung with drapery swags, with open pediment centred by a shaped cartouche, with foliate-carved serpentine apron on a hatched ground, the reverse inscribed in chalk 'Window Sconces(?)' and 'TO 18', regilt, previously with candlebranches, the peripheral carving possibly later

Lot Essay

This tablet-cornered pier-glass is designed in the George II 'Roman' fashion promoted by James Gibbs' Book of Architecture, 1728. With its escutcheon-centred temple pediment and veil-draped vestal head, it also relates to pier-glass patterns in the architect William Jones' The Gentleman or Builder's Companion, 1739.
