One depicting an attendant of Venus, bearing roses and with roses in her hair and in a basket beside her, on a circular base; the other depicting an attendant of Bacchus, entwining bunches of grapes into her hair, with a basket beside her overflowing with fruit and bunches of grapes and vine, on a circular plinth signed 'J. S. WESTMACOTT. SC. 1855', weathered, with later circular plaster plinths

Lot Essay

James Sherwood Westmacott (1823-1900) studied with Sir Richard Westmacott and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1846-1885. In 1849 he travelled to Rome, and in 1855 - the same year these figures were carved - he showed his marble group of 'The Perri at the Gates of Paradise' in the Paris Exhibition.
