CIRCA 1730, RECONSTRUCTED FROM A LARGER BOOKCASE IN THE LATE 18TH EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The rectangular moulded cavetto cornice above a pair of glazed doors enclosing a vertical division and five adjustable shelves on each side, the right side enclosing three small drawers at the lower edge, above four panelled doors and a moulded plinth, five later shelves

Lot Essay

The bookcase's pattern of six-pane glazing features in several bookcases published in Batty Langley's City and Country Builder's and Workman's Treasury of Designs, 1740. One such bookcase at Uppark, Hampshire may have been provided by William Hallett (d.1781) (A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, fig 68).
