In February 1928 he joined West Bromwich Albion, and spent almost his entire playing career with The Baggies. Season 1934-35 saw his side reach the F.A.Cup Final against Sheffield Wednesday which ended in a 4-2 defeat. He made his International debut for Wales against England on 16 October 1932 and made a total of fifteen appearances for Wales, some as captain. He made 204 appearances for West Bromwich Albion before joining Swindon Town in 1939. However, he only played for the Swindon side on four occasions before retiring from League football in 1940. During the war Murphy played for Morris Commercial F.C. before serving in the Royal Artillery and Eighth Army. Stationed in Bari he was responsible for a Services Sports centre. It was here that Matt Busby, newly appointed manager of Manchester United, offered Murphy a job. Working with United coach, Bert Whalley and chief scout, Joe Armstrong, Murphy was responsible for the reserves and United's youth teams. He turned United's youth sides into a production line of young talent. United won the F.A. Youth Cup for five years running, from 1953 to 1957. The Busby Babes were a direct result of the hard work by Busby, Murphy and the rest of the coaching staff. Appointed assistant manager on 22nd March 1955, Murphy was thrown into the spotlight in 1958 after the horrific Munich air crash. With Busby gravely ill, Murphy took control at United. In the first United match after the Munich Disaster, Murphy's side of two survivors, Harry Gregg and Bill Foulkes, 7 reserves and youth players defeated Sheffield Wednesday 3-0. Whilst United's League form slumped Murphy worked miracles to get United through to the F.A. Cup Final that year. They lost 2-0 against Bolton Wanderers. Murphy was to remain in the managerial seat until Busby returned in August. Busby, however, was still requiring constant treatment, and a lot of the managerial burden remained with Murphy. Appointed manager of Wales in 1956, Murphy led the Welsh team to the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup, which resulted in a close 0-1 defeat against the eventual champions, Brazil. He remained manager of Wales until June 1963. Despite managerial offers from Juventus and Arsenal, Murphy remained loyal to United. Even after his retirement in September 1971, he continued scouting for future United talent, right up to a few days before his death on 14th November 1989.
