Lot Essay

The above cap represents the four games played by Alan Ball during the historic World Cup Tournament of 1966. In the opening match against Uruguay played on 11th July before 87,000 spectators England drew 0-0. In the quarter-final match played on 23rd July 1966 before 90,584 spectators, England defeated Argentina 1-0, with Hurst scoring the only goal of the game. In the semi-final match played on 26th July 1966 before 94,493 spectators, England defeated Portugal 2-1. In the final played on 30th July 1966 before 96,924 spectators, England won the World Cup for the first and so far only time defeating West Germany 4-2 after extra time.
