Lot Essay

Educated at Charterhouse and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Sir Creswell Creswell belonged to a family that descended in direct line from the time of Richard I.

Appointed first judge in ordinary to the newly created Probate and Divorce Court in 1858, Creswell was famed for reforming and modernising the old ecclesiastical rules of evidence in matrimonial cases.

He died on 29 July, 1863 as a result from injuries sustained from a horsing accident.
