Lot Essay

The back of the King of Clubs has a handwritten note: 'Constantia Orlebar her Bubble Card given her by her good sister Orlebar but what day of the month I don't know but I know she gave it to me in 1748.'

Constantia Orlebar was the youngest of three maiden sisters who moved to Ecton following their father's death in 1765. They led an active life and were comfortably well off. Constantia is famed for keeping her 'Weather Books' journals from 1768 to her death in 1808. The journals were a great reference to the Meteorological Office. The 'M.O' written on the paper pack with the cards could refer to the eldest sister, Mary Orlebar.
