Lot Essay

The present two plates and the sauce-tureen stand in the following lot are likely from the same service. The flower-painting may be by Philip Clavey or perhaps William 'Quaker' Pegg. Cf. John Twitchett, Derby Porcelain, London, 1980, pp. 219-220, 241-fig. 321, 255-257, 268-figs. 63-65. It is interesting to compare the painting of the poppy with that of the same flower on a plate in lot 127 of the present sale.
