Lot Essay

As recounted in I Kings 21: 1-15, Ahab, King of Samaria, went to his neighbor Naboth the Jezreelite and asked him to exchange his family's property for another vineyard. Ahab wanted to turn the vineyard into an herb garden, but Naboth refused to part with his inherited land. Hearing of his refusal, Queen Jezebel arranged for false witness to be brought against Naboth and for him to be stoned to death, thus enabling her to take posession of the land.

See Dr. Johanna Lessmann, Italienische Majolika: Catalog der Sammlung, Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick, 1979, nos. 773 - 777, for dishes attributed to the workshop of Domenico da Venezia similar in style to the present example. No. 776, also illustrated as color plate 46, is particularly close in its style of architecture, the rendering of the keystones and bricks, and the distinctive way in which the windows are drawn.
