Lot Essay

Hans Jaffé stated in 1979: 'The series of paintings - made in 1935 and later - in which a time eroded sculpture stands before a wide mountainscape, is a variation on the works Straat met Standbeeld (cat.no. 157) and Stadsgezicht (cat.no. 162): The emptiness and desolation are suggested here by the contrast between the larger figure in the foreground placed against a background space which contains no trace of life (....). Arcadisch landschap would appear to be an exception but even this scene follows what Willink notes: 'A sunny landscape, former symbol of pastoral peace can form unbearable menace.' (Jaffé, p. 194)
