Lot Essay

The unusual subjects of the four plaques are four heroes from the Greek War of Independence, a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire that took place between 1821 and 1829. Two of the leading insurgents were Marcos Botzaris (1788-1823), who distinguished himself by his courage and skill as a partisan leader, but who fell during the celebrated Turkish rout at Karpenisi, and Alexander Mavrokordatos (1791-1865), who wrote the Greek Declaration of Independence and was President of the first national assembly in 1822. Constantine Canaris (1793-1877) distinguished himself as an admiral in the war and served several terms as Prime Minister, and Ioannis Gouras (1791-1826) was commander of the Acropolis but himself fell under Turkish assault.

The dedication to the reverse seems to refer to Prince Napoleon Louis Bonaparte (1804-1831), son of King Louis Bonaparte of Holland and Duchess Hortense Beauharnais, the nephew of Napoleon I and brother of Napoleon III. He married his cousin Princess Charlotte (1802-1839), the daugher of Joseph Bonaparte, the elder brother of Napoleon I, in Italy on 23rd July 1827, and this bracelet may well date to the time of their wedding.
