In this early watercolour, the artist shows his love of turn-of-the-century British country life. A genre scene, it depicts a light-hearted moment outside an inn, acutely observed and executed in pencil and wash. It also shows the artist's enduring interest in horses, with the sensitively drawn horse occupying the centre of the composition.
