The London based County Fire Office was established in 1807 by John Thomas Barber Beaumont (d.1841), together with 'an association of noblemen and gentlemen' drawn from a number of the counties surrounding London. Each county was allocated 250 shares at 100 pounds each. The emblem of the office, a Britannia-like figure with a shield and lion and carrying a spear rather than a trident was used as early as 1807.
