Lot Essay

The sitter was a director of the London Assurance Company from its foundation by Walter, 1st Lord Chetwynd, in 1720, and became Governor of the company from 1723-36. During this time, the Corporation was based in Castle Court, Birchin Lane, with a back entrance to Cornhill, and was opened as The London Assurance House in August, 1720.
