Lot Essay

The present chest was purchased by the Westminster Fire Office in 1717 for '2 pounds 5 shilling.' It is probably this chest, that in 1792 the Westminster Fire Office record as 'having in their hands a larger sum of Money than they thought it was prudent to place in the Chest.'
