Octavius Edward Coope served as a Director of the Phoenix Assurance Company from 1845 to 1886. He was the grandson of John Coope, Senior, who had been a founding member (see lot 31).

In 1845 he embarked upon a brewing venture. By 1859 the company, Messrs. Ind, Coope & Co., was the third largest in the market. He served as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Yarmouth from 1847- 1848, and Middlesex, 1874-1886.
