Lot Essay
Jenkin Jones (d.1837) was Secretary of the Phoenix Assurance Company from 1805 until his death in April 1837. He was sent by the directors of the company in 1807 on a tour of the United States to obtain topographical information for the major towns and cities, and to assess potential Fire Insurance business. The Jones report, published in 1808, listed almost eight hundred Phoenix Assurance policies in the United States, demonstrating that they were the leading Fire Insurance company in America.
Henry Weekes b.1807, d.1877.
A student of the Royal Academy where he received a silver medal in 1826. The following year he joined Chantery's studio in Buckingham Palace Road as an assistant. He took over the premises after Chantrey's death, and where he completed many of his late maste's unfinished works. While Weeks was chiefly a portrait sculptor, he was also an accomplished monumental sculptor. His best known work being the commemorative group of the Shelley in the Priory Church at Christchurch, Hampshire. After his death Christie's sold the remaining works on the 29th of May, 1880, where his figure of a ''Sleeping child'' fetched one hundred and fifty two guineas.
