Lot Essay

The Custom House was built btween 1717 and 1725 by Thomas Ripley, on the foundations of an earlier building by Sir Christopher Wren, that had been severly damaged by fire after a nearby gunpowder magazine exploded. The picture show Ripley's Custom House being burnt down in 1814 to make way for a newer and larger building.
