Lot Essay

Thomas Whitcombe specialised in maritime painting and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1783 and 1824. He is recorded as having worked from various London addresses, although little is known about the artist, despite his prodigious output. Over fifty plates of his paintings were included in The Naval Achievements of Great Britain from the Year 1793-1817, J. Jenkins, London 1817.
