Portrait of the Third Viscount Hampden in a brown jacket

Viscount Hampden was born on the 29th Jan 1869, the eldest son of the second Viscount Hampden and Susan Henrietta, daughter of Lord George Cavendish. In 1899 he married Lady Katharine Mary Montagu-Douglas-Scott, daughter of the 6th Duke of Buccleugh. He was first connected to the County Fire Office in 1905 when he became their auditor; he became a director in 1906 and succeeded Lord Kinnaird as Chariman in 1923.

In 1933 Oswald Birley was commissioned to paint a portrait of Lord Hampden to be hung on the same wall in the Board Room as the Pickersgill portrait of John Thomas Barber Beaumont. Lord Hampden was informed at the end of a board meeting on the 20th June 1933, of the unanimous desire of the directors that he should sit to Mr Birley for his portrait.
