Lot Essay

The origin of the Alliance Assurance emblem, which appears so prominently on the arm of the fireman in the present picture, is unclear. The number that appears at the bottom of the badge, which in this case appears to be 17, relates to the rank of the fireman; the lower the number, the more elevated his position within the service.
