AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED COLUMN-KRATER
CIRCA 510-500 B.C.
One side with bearded and wreathed Dionysos standing with a rhyton in his raised left hand, grape vines in his right, facing right but looking back toward a nude satyr, a dancing maenad to the right, moving left but looking back toward a nude satyr moving right and looking over his shoulder; the other side preserving Apollo playing the kithara at the center, his plectrum in his right hand, the god standing beside a four-horse chariot facing right, fragments of a goddess's head behind, presumably Artemis, perhaps standing in the chariot, her small doe before them, fragments of a pseudo-inscription in the field; the scenes framed with ivy on either side and a band of tongues above, with ivy on the sides of the rim, lotus bud chain on the upper surface of the rim and on the neck on one side, palmettes on the handle-plates, rays above the foot
14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) high
