Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Wendy Wassyng Roworth for confirming the attribution to Kauffman (written communication, March 2005) from color photographs. She notes that 'This composition is widely known through the stipple engraving after Kauffman's circular painting by the printmaker William Wynne Ryland published in London in May 1776 ... The painting's color and treatment of the figures, drapery, and landscape background are consistent with Kauffman's style'.
