Lot Essay
The present work relates to a drawing of the same subject by Christoph Gertner, signed and dated 1609, in the Courtauld Institute Galleries, London (see fig. 1).
It is assumed that Christoph Gertner spent some time in Prague around 1600 because of his stylistic affinity with painters such as Hans von Aachen and Joseph Heintz at the Court of Rudolf II. By 1604 he was court painter to Henry Julius, Duke of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel, until he left in 1621 to work for the Protestant Archbishop of Brandenburg. Most of Gertner's works are still in various institutions in the German city of Wolfenbüttel.
