Lot Essay

The present panel includes a close reference to Titian's The Bacchanal of the Andrians (Museo del Prado, Madrid) in the form of the putto on the right lifting up his shirt to expose himself to his companion. The other putti, while not taken directly from a known work by Titian, are similar in type to those used by the master in other paintings, including the Allegory of the Three Ages of Man (National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh) and An Offering to Venus (Museo del Prado, Madrid).
