Several of the watercolours in this album are simply inscribed "bateau pecheur" but the majority have specific titles, often followed by their individual nationalities. As a region, the Mediterranean has produced a surprisingly large number of relatively small vessels and this collection provides a unique glimpse into the evolutionary process of the coastal sailing ship.

Arguably, the most successful of the Roux dynasty, Ange-Joseph-Antoine was the father and master of Mathieu-Antoine, Frederic and Francois- Geoffroi. His work remained superior in quality and was the inspiration for a large following of aspiring French and Italian marine watercolour painters.
