Lot Essay

Surf was a sleek and elegant screw schooner designed by Cox & King and built by Hawthorns at Leith for Mr. F.D. Lambert, J.P. Completed in 1902, she was registered at 496 tons gross (216 net & 560 Thames) and measured 186 feet in length with a 25½ foot beam. During the Great War, she was hired from Lambert by the Admiralty and employed as an auxiliary patrol yacht armed with 2-12pdr. guns. Released in 1919, she was sold to Mr. Alexander Axarlis of London and was owned by the Skiathus Shipping Co. by 1939. Again hired for war service, this time as an armed boarding vessel, she was sunk at Piraeus during an air-raid on 6th April 1941.
