Centrally, a handsome topsail ketch is sailing up the Clyde, having rounded Cloch Point with its lighthouse in the distance to the right. The uniformed crew, the elaborately scrolled and decorated bulwarks, with the masthead pennant and Union Jack at the bowsprit tip, all suggest a prestigiously owned private yacht.

In the background from left to right, the supporting craft include a topsail sloop, a schooner and then astern of the yacht a brig, and a departing ship.

The artist is apparently depicting an eighteenth century historical event. In which case there is a minor anachronism since the Union flags depicted include the post-1801 red saltire of Ireland.

Christie's are grateful to Sam Davidson for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
