Lot Essay

Built in New Brunswick, Canada, in 1855, the three-masted Tiptree was registered at 1,650 tons and measured 230½ feet in length with a 42½ foot beam. Owned first by R. Alexander of London, she began her career trading to India under Captain J. Pinel who, by 1866, had handed over to Captain P. Pinel, possibly his son. After about five years under his command, Tiptree disappears from record.
