Lot Essay

The three-masted iron barque Bessel traded under her original name of Ville d'Anvers for just over thirty years before being renamed when purchased by Norwegian owners in 1900. Built by Readhead, Softley & Co. at South Shields, on the Tyne, in 1869, she was registered at 480 tons gross (431 net) and measured 153 feet in length with a 27½ foot beam. Re-registered under the Norwegian flag at Arendal when sold, her career lasted a further ten years or so until she disappears from record before 1914, presumably scrapped.
