Lot Essay

Shown in two views on opposite tacks, the 'pilot jack' at the foremast indicates the request for a pilot. In the second view, sail has been reduced and the brig's long boat has been lowered from the stern davits and is being towed astern.

To the north, the Antrim coastline forms the background with the vicinity of Blackhead off to the right and the unmistakeable outline of Carrickfergus Castle and the spire of St. Nicholas near the left margin. *

Zuleika (233 tons and 111 feet long) was built at Prince Edward Island in 1866 and was in active service until at least 1889. Shown here in her original rig, she was converted to a brigantine by 1868, which helps date the painting fairly accurately.

Christie's are grateful to Sam Davidson for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
