Owned by Watts, Ward & Co. of London, Bayswater was built by J. Blumer & Co. at Sunderland in 1880. A general cargo steamer registered at 1,623 tons gross (1,039 net), she measured 251½ feet in length with a 35 foot beam and was engined by T. Clark & Co, of Newcastle.
