Lot Essay

The present drawing relates to a series of drawings, executed for acquatints that were produced in 1776, of Windsor Great Park now in the Royal Collection, Windsor. This may be a study for the figure of a small boy with a whip that appears in the composition Windsor terrace looking westward.

It has been suggested that this is a sketch of the artist's nephew, Thomas Paul Sanby. Thomas Sandby, Paul's brother, was appointed the Ranger of Windsor Great Park in 1746.
