The present drawing and lot 35 are both studies from nature and fine examples from the late 1750s. From their size they would appear to have come from a disbound sketchbook (see lot 35). The present drawing is similar in its execution to J. Hayes, The Drawings of Thomas Gainsborough, London, 1970, pp. 152, 157, nos. 176, 200, pls. 252 and 426, (also illustrated in Gainsborough in Canada, Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, 1988, no. 15) where Gainsborough focuses on the depiction of sunlight on the foliage of the trees.
