Lot Essay

Huon Mallalieu mentions 'Mr Cheney of Badger, Shropshire' as a pupil of Peter De Wint, O.W.S. (1784-1849), and we also know from Edward Cheney's journals that Robert Henry Cheney travelled extensively in Italy with Cromek, whose influence can also be seen in his work, see Christie's, London, 6 June 2002, lots 37-53. In Edward's journal of February 29 1832 he writes 'I went with H[enry] & Cromek to the Cesaro Palace, the day was not a becoming one ... an artist would not quit this one spot ...'.
