Shepherd is perhaps best known for the series of London scenes that he executed in collaboration with his elder son, Thomas Homer, for aquatints to be published in Ackermann's Repository of the Arts beginning in 1813. Whilst these were on a large scale, they do not compare to this present watercolour, whose subject matter and impressive size suggest that it may have been executed as a private commission.

Another view of Richmond was exhibited at the New Water-colour Society in 1838 entitled Richmond Hill, no. 282.
