Lot Essay

Turner first visited the Lake District in 1814. His only other recorded visit there was in July 1840. The present scene is depicted from the top of the field beside Holbeck Lane. Langdale Pikes is on the right of the picture with Bowfell behind to the left. Weatherham is the high fell towards the back left of the scene.
