Lot Essay

First grown by the Rev. John Clowes and Messrs. Loddiges in 1847, this orchid was described in the Gardener's Chronicle, 1848. The drawing by Fitch of Oncidium phymatochilum, reproduced in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, 1860, was made at Kew from 'the late Mr. Clowes's plant'.
