Lot Essay

This watercolour is based on sketches made in 1838 when Callow first visited Switzerland and a view which he executed on a number of occasions. Having visited most of the picturesque sights in Switzerland, Callow returned via the Rhine and finished his walking tour. It appears that he visited Schaffhausen about 10 September 1838. Callow exhibited a watercolour entitled 'Above Schaffhausen' at the Society of Painters in Water-colour, 1858.
