Lot Essay

This present view looks down Drury Lane onto the Strand and St Mary le Strand church opposite Somerset House. In 1711 an Act of Parliament was passed for the building of fifty New Churches, the so-called 'Queen Anne Churches', St Mary le Strand was the work of architect James Gibbs. The church was built to replace a much earlier church that stood on the site of nearby Somerset House where Thomas à Becket was said to have been rector.
