Lot Essay

Mrs Allingham's watercolours of Wiltshire subjects result from a sketching trip to Redlynch and Downton in 1906. It was the abundance of unspoilt thatched buildings that instantly caught her eye and they formed the greater part of her output during her visits to the South West.

Over the years, Allingham's cottage paintings continued to depict the regional differences of traditional materials used in vernacular buildings, and her Wiltshire paintings added a new variation.

We are grateful Annabel Watts for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
