Lot Essay

This present drawing relates to an oil on panel painting of Edwin in the National Museums and Galleries of Wales dated circa .1911. The oil was recently exhibited in London, Tate, Gwen and Augustus John, 2004, cat. no. 52. Edwin John was Augustus and Ida's fourth son born on 27 November 1905. Following the death of his mother, Ida, he formed a deep attachment with Dorelia McNeill, John's mistress. However, he shared a troubled relationship with his father that remained fractious throughout his life.
